…Otherwise it is hard to say, but there is an excellent radicalism in these sounds that however fit wonderfully well with the recited poetry, which seem to posses very little emotion (I might be wrong there).
Hsia Yu recites these in a way that isn’t imposing or acting, but just as it is — I suppose. In all its extremity this is actually a quiet release — how curious. Very enjoyable, whatever it means.

A more accurate album title than this would be difficult to find.

I went into this album having very few expectations. The two artists involved have no work that I am familiar with, and I did not realize until after having heard it that the great Taku Unami was responsible for the mastering. After having heard it a few times now, I am very much looking forward to seeing where these musicians take their projects in the future, as what they’ve crafted here is one of my favorite listening experiences of the past several months.

The combination of piercing high pitched tones, quiet and resonant field recordings, and Chinese poetry delivered in a tone that can be either relaxing or menacing depending on how it was recorded is a wonderland of uniquely atmospheric and disturbingly haunted sounds. At times, 夏宇 [Hsia Yu]’s breathy voice sounds so close to you that she may as well be reciting these poems from directly within your ear canal, an auditory experience that can be quite frightening.

I don’t speak a word of Chinese, but that is no hindrance for my enjoyment since I can mostly listen to the poems as tonal pieces where the instrument is the human voice. Some people may not be willing or able to do this, and for them I’d recommend either staying away from this album or getting a translation. I’d also recommend staying away from this album for anyone who thinks the title is unappealing. I mean really, the fact that it’s called 7 Poems and Some Tinnitus is all you need to know about this album before you figure out whether or not you’ll like it.

I’d need to hear it a few more times if I wanted to be track-specific with my praises, but for now I will leave it at this: 7 Poems and Some Tinnitus is a strange, often terrifying journey through harsh, difficult sounds, though it carries with it a wonderfully rewarding atmospheric experience that is not easily described or recreated. Without a doubt one of the best albums of 2016.
